Academic Structure
Laboratries are the fundamental units of the ACBR. headed by a senior faculty member. The lab may include several other junior faculty members plus post doctoral fellows and graduate fellows; who share the common scientific interests of the group. This structure provides flexibility and enhances the opportunity for intellectual interaction and collaboration, and minimizes the administrative traffic that may impede academic life.
The ACBR, University departments, CSIR Center for Biochemical Technology, Defence- Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences, Center for Biochemical Technology (CBT), (INMAS), Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), Ranbaxy India Ltd., VP Chest Institute and University Medical Colleges are collaborating in offering an M.Sc, M.Phil., Ph.D. and M.Sc - Ph.D. combined degree program of advanced study and research in Biomedical Sciences. In addition, ACBR arranges many research colloquia, seminars, lectures by visiting scientists and other special programs.
The graduate study program is dedicated to educating a small group of students regarded as potential leaders in their scientific field. Students associated with a faculty of scientists-scholars, all actively engaged in research and learn primarily through a combination of courses, groups discussion, tutorial guidance and apprenticeship in various research laboratories.
It is generally observed that the students from downtrodden segment of the society do not join scientific research career, because of their inability to meet high cost of education and proper guidance. Therefore, the ACBR proposes to start counselling Programs for such students to attract and motivate them for a career in Biomedical Research.
Duration & Time of Academic YearThe academic year commences from the 2nd week of July and consists of two semesters. The first semester begins in July and ends in the middle of November, and the Second semester runs from the January till the end of April every year. Each semester consists of fourteen weeks of instruction followed by semester Examinations.
Scientific InteractionThe Center organised an International seminar on "Interface between Chemistry and Biology" which was inaugurated by Prof. Ronald Breslow, President American Chemical Society and Prof. B. Sarkar, Head, Biochemistry Research, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. ACBR organized the 34th Annual Convention of Chemists (during Jan. 1-3, 1997), which was attended by a galaxy of eminent scientists both from India and abroad. Subsequently the ACBR organised a symposium on "Frontiers in Biomedical Research" during March-April 1998. The symposium was inagurated by Shri Dalit Ezhil Malai, Hon'ble Minister of Health. A two day seminar was organised on "Current Status of Oral and Implantable Contraceptive Agents", an area where research would be tremendously beneficial for the nation at large. A seminar on Drug Discovery and Development was held on December 17th, 1998. The President of the American Chemical Society, Prof Ed. Wasserman and Dr. Satinder Ahuja, Visiting Faculty ACBR, from Pace University, USA delivered keynote addresses. In addition a large number of seminars, refresher courses, summer programs, invited lectures of eminent scientists and professional technologists were held during last 5 years. Post Doctoral OpportunitiesACBR has a strong commitment to the full involvement of post doctoral fellows in all aspects of Scientific, Educational and Cultural activities of the community. Each year post doctorates are associated with research activities in all the laboratories, where they are encouraged to continue their scientific training and pursue their research interests. In addition they also participate in the seminars and colloquia held at the ACBR and in the Weekly Research Seminar Series. Prospective recipients of Ph.D. degree who wish to apply for post-doctoral positions should write to the Laboratory Heads with whom they want to work. In most instances, candidates for post-doctoral training at the ACBR obtain funds from a private or a governmental agency. However, the ACBR proposes to award few post-doctoral fellowships annually, to the students for a limited period, at the beginning of their research.
Special FacilitiesThe ACBR is fully equiped with latest state of art Scientific Instruments which include two FT-IR (Shimadzu, Japan and Perkin Elmer, Switzerland), HPLC, GLC, UV-Vis-Spectrophotometers, PCR machines, Fluorimeter, a Gel documentation system, a Olympus compound microscope and a UV transilluminator. The Laboratory Animal House, supports the Center's animal-based research through a comprehensive program of animal care and the toxicological research. The Center has a Conference Hall for lectures, symposia and other academic meets. As mentioned in subsequent pages the Center has one of the best computer and internet facilities in University of Delhi.
